Background

The Centre for Advanced and Applied Research (CAAR SCHOLARS) successfully provided research implementation and field coordination support for a major study on mining governance in the Atiwa East District of Ghana. The research was conducted in collaboration with the Atiwa East District Assembly, the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), bringing together local institutions and international academic partners to generate evidence for sustainable natural resource governance. As part of the project, CAAR SCHOLARS coordinated and implemented comprehensive field data collection activities across several communities, including Nanapa, Fremponso, Adasewasa, Asamang Tamfoe, Train Station, and other surrounding communities within the district. The research employed a mixed-methods approach comprising household surveys, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) to capture diverse perspectives on mining governance, community participation, environmental management, and local development. The study engaged community members, traditional authorities, local government officials, and other key stakeholders, ensuring that the findings reflected the realities and experiences of communities directly affected by mining activities. Through rigorous data collection protocols and stakeholder engagement, the project generated high-quality evidence to support research, policy dialogue, and informed decision-making on responsible mining governance. This collaboration underscores CAAR SCHOLARS' commitment to delivering high-quality research implementation services and supporting multidisciplinary studies that address pressing development challenges. By partnering with universities, government institutions, and development organizations, CAAR SCHOLARS continues to strengthen evidence-based research and contribute to sustainable development initiatives across Ghana and beyond.
