Climate Change and Mental Health in Market Places in Accra
Timeline: November 2025 - February 2026
Background
The Centre for Advanced and Applied Research (CAAR SCHOLARS) completed a major research project on the intersection of mental health and climate change across five major markets in Accra: Madina, Nima, Kantamanto, Agbogbloshie, and Dome. The study involved the collection of 500 survey responses to support the research work of a PhD student from the University of Ghana currently undertaking an exchange program at Yale University. The project explored how climate-related challenges such as heat stress, flooding, poor environmental conditions, and economic vulnerabilities affect the mental well-being of traders and residents within urban market communities. Through extensive field engagement and data collection, the study contributes to growing global conversations on climate resilience, public health, and the social impacts of environmental change in vulnerable urban spaces.
